This book is dedicated to my amazing parents. My Mom and Dad have been my biggest cheerleaders and have been my support system. They allowed me to voice my concerns and fears and they never backed away. My beautiful parents stayed strong for me knowing that there was not much they could do. They listened when I needed to talk, they held me when I cried and they give the best hugs. I am so lucky to have two amazing people, Johnny and Paula Sullivan, as my parents. I could not have come this far without you.

Love you - Jacqui

sur·vi·vor

/sərˈvīvər/

noun

a person who survives, especially a person remaining alive after an event in which others have died.

"the sole survivor of the massacre"

the remainder of a group of people or things. "a survivor from last year's team"

a person who copes well with difficulties in their life.

I am a survivor, just like you. You and I, we beat the odds and we are alive. But what does that mean being alive? Today, many years after the trauma that changed my life, it means that I have everything I need to be so very happy. Through years of research and no sleep, I found a way to be, just be and that to me is happiness. I don't think anyone truly appreciates life until they have almost lost theirs. At least I didn’t. I took it completely for granted. Boy oh boy do I appreciate every moment now.

If you don’t feel this way right at this moment, then you will after reading this book. You see, you and I have so much in common, we got a second chance. So many others didn’t, and that crushes my soul, but I’m alive. Let me repeat that. I’M ALIVE!!! And so are you! We were given a second chance at life. So, let’s make the best of it! This book is also available on Amazon Kindle for a fee but if I could go back in time, I wish that this would have been available for me. I was so lost, but I found and easy manor to find my way back. This is my gift to you for being a survivor!

30 Day Diary How To Go From Broken To Blissful

When I was a little girl, I thought I was special because I believed I could communicate with animals. My parents would just laugh and call me a silly girl and give me a big hug. I was raised in a small family with my Mom, Dad and brother. My grandparents passed away when I was young so I turned to my parents for everything because they were my whole world. I was so sweet and naive even into my teenage years. I just wanted to be safe and happy and for everyone around me to be happy. I surrounded myself with fun loving people that enjoyed life. I look back now and see how blessed I was to have had such a wonderful childhood. My parents made us have family night every Wednesday and that was the only night we could eat in the living room and we always had pizza. We would set around the living room table, eating pizza with the TV off while my parents listened as my brother and I talked about what was going on in our lives and our friends lives. We would talk for hours about how we doing in school, with dating, with friends and we talked about our dreams. My parents were so smart to do this and to this day we still have open communication.

What an amazing childhood then seventeen hit me in the face like a two by four. My world changed so quickly, it spun me off my heels. I started having what I thought was premonitions, but now I know that I was creating my future. Why couldn’t I have known that then?

I was still a new driver but I did so good in driving and in school that my parents bought me a new car for my upcoming senior year. It was still summer so my brother, his best friend and I decided to drive to the beach, which was maybe 20 miles away. We were on the interstate and it was busy with people ready for the sand and sun. I was driving and there were so many eighteen wheelers and I could not stop thinking about how bad it would be to be hit by one. I just could not stop seeing it in my head. Then, as we were driving, I saw my brother’s face in my peripheral vision so I looked over and he had a face that he appeared to be screaming but no sounds were coming out. He pointed out my window so I looked to the left and a huge eighteen wheeler was changing lanes and didn’t see us. It had those scary spike wheels that look so menacing. It happened so quickly that I couldn’t react and there were cars everywhere. I didn’t know what to do and before I knew it, his spiked hubcaps had sawed a hole into my driver’s door like a can opener. We were stuck on his wheel and I didn’t know what to do. I just knew we were going to die. I started screaming and without thinking, just trying to save our lives, I gripped the steering wheel very tight and turned it hard right. Amazingly, we came off of the eighteen wheeler and came inches from landing in a ditch. I say it’s amazing because that crowded interstate was immediately thinly scattered with cars. There were almost no cars so when we pulled off of the eighteen wheeler, we were put onto a ramp that got us off the interstate.

Well, it doesn’t end there. As if that was not bad enough, this was the week of Friday the 13th and it was only Tuesday. By Thursday, I was getting over the big rig jitters and getting dressed to go to my summer job. I had the music loud, probably listening to Bon Jovi when I noticed that my wall was moving towards me and a very loud crash. I thought the house was falling down. My Mom and Dad started yelling at me and my brother because we were always fighting. When I say fighting, I mean really fighting. We both were in karate classes so we really tried to hurt each other and take each other down. Did I mention that he is only one year younger so we were at the same level. My parents always heard banging and screaming. So when I screamed and started running, my parents naturally assumed that my brother and I were fighting. However as I ran to them and told them that my wall was caving in, they ran outside immediately to see what was going on. There happened to be a massive tool truck sticking out of my room. It happened when my neighbor, up the hill, put his work truck in neutral and put the brakes on and went back inside for coffee. The brake was not secure so the huge truck rolled right down the hill into my room. During the repairs, the contractors and insurance inspectors said that the truck nearly missed the support beam and surely I would have perished. Creepy.

They say things happen in threes, so why not. I was really freaked out and questioning if I should really still be alive. Something is going on. Well it was now Friday and I had to go to work so my sweet Daddy let me borrow his truck. I was backing the truck out of the carport and turned too hard and nearly ripped the entire roof off of the carport. I hit a supporting beam and the top of the garage almost landed on the truck. Oh my gosh, I’m sure at this point my Dad was thinking that he couldn’t afford me on the insurance any longer. Probably not, I was a walking disaster. By the end of summer, my car, my room and the roof was repaired and back in order. Thankfully I had an uneventful senior year in high school. It was very normal and fun. I have great memories and so thankful nothing ruined it.

Now on to college and I had my second “premonition”. I was dating a really cute guy that was into me, but into all the other girls too. I have no idea why I kept thinking that if I ended up in the hospital, he would finally see his feelings for me and make a decision to be with me. I had several dreams that I would be in the hospital and it was weirding me out. At this time, I lived on campus in a dorm across from the Humanities building. It was a pretty big campus at the University of South Alabama and I always walked to class. I was running late and had already used my allowable miss days and only had one left so I wanted to save that for the day after a party or something like that. I just remember that I couldn’t be late for class. I was running across the parking lot and stopped at the crosswalk. It was strange that there weren’t many cars because this road was the main road between all of the dorms and university buildings. I waited for a few cars to go by and it was safe for me to go. I started walking and I saw a car coming fast and it wasn’t stopping. I tried to run but I ended up on the top of the hood starring straight at the girl driving. She was waving at some dude and ran right into me. I remember this like it was a movie. I looked at the girl and she looked at me and she then slammed on brakes. I went flying backwards and landed at least five feet from the car. I remember all of the students ran over and people were yelling not to touch me because I may have broke my neck. All I could think about was that I lost my last free day because of this stupid chick. Great! It doesn’t seem like I was there very long, but I was in shock. It seemed like may 10 minutes and the ambulance was there asking the year and who the president was. I was rushed off to the hospital and I found out that I enjoy flirting while in shock. Little shy Jacqui was now flirting with all of the hot doctors and nurses. So it turns out that I walked away from a head on collision with a car, with only two bruises where the bumper hit my legs and a hairline fracture in my spine. My options were to have spinal surgery or do lifelong exercises to keep my back strong to support my spine. I still have the fracture and it bothers me when I slack on the back exercises. But come on, how did I get out of that one? By the way, I was not in the hospital long enough for the cute guy to come visit me so he visited me at my parents house and we did date for a short time.

The following “premonition” happened a few years later while I was in college. I was working full time and going to school full time at night and had my own apartment. Life was good, I had a soft top red Jeep Wrangler and I was surfing before work and on weekends. I was at the beach as often as I could and I was seeing a lifeguard from Destin, when we had time available. We had spent the entire summer together with our friends and with school back in session it was getting hard to see each other.

I say that this was a “premonition” because on the TV for the last year, a serial rapist was breaking into single girls apartments who lived on the first floor. I was a little scared because I lived alone so my Dad always told me to double check that the windows and doors are locked. I couldn’t get news stories out of my head. I will never forget that night it happened to me. I still sometimes blame myself. I had planned to go surfing in Destin and spend the weekend with my lifeguard boyfriend. I was on the phone with him and we had a little argument. Well, I was a sassy, spunky chick and I didn’t have to go to Destin, I could hang out with my girlfriends. Was that my mistake? If I had gone to Destin, would my life still be innocent to crime and hate? The answer is no because I had a stalker that I had no idea of. I was in college and loving life. I had the best friends and always having fun. On this fateful night, I invited my friends to my apartment for a pre-party then to go dancing. We had an awesome night and afterward I went to home and to sleep expecting the next day to be just as great.

I heard a voice, from my dreams, getting louder and louder saying “Wake up”, “Wake up now”, Wake up”, “WAKE UP NOW!!!!!”. I dreamily woke up to the largest black man I have ever seen, standing over my bed, about to punch me in the face. I fought the best I could but the inevitable happened and I was brutally raped and beaten. I was making so much noise, with yelling and screaming, that he finally ran out of the apartment. I ran to the bathroom as fast as I could, locked the door, cowered in the tub, ran the water and stayed there for hours. I was so scared that if I open the door, he would kill me. Finally, I had to make the decision to come out of the bathroom because I had to call the police and my parents. He was not in my room so I grabbed the phone and ran back into the tub with the door locked. I didn’t come out again until the police arrived. I then had the courage to call my parents. That was the worst call ever. How do you tell your parents that that their worst fear just happened?

I did everything right, I had the extra lock on my patio sliding glass door. I had the extra bolt locked on my front door. I had mace in the drawer next to the bed. I took martial arts when I was younger to be a stronger person. I did everything right! How could this happen? It turns out that he was a neighbor and had been stalking me and figured out how to cut through the firewalls in the attic space. He got into my apartment and no one knew. He even took the time to lock my sweet, tabby, kitty cat in the pantry. My little Chloe was never the same after that night either. We were in this together.

I had to go to the hospital, answer all of the crude questions, do the rape kit and watch them scrape his skin from under my fingernails. There was a very nice lady there offering me information for counseling and a number to call to talk. This was surreal. I knew this happened in the world and had been happening for thousands of years. Man wants woman, he can’t have her, so he uses his power to beat her down into nothing and take everything from her. I did everything I was supposed to do to prevent this from happening to me. How in the hell am I now doing a rape kit? I really wished I had been killed because I couldn’t grasp my new world that I had been thrown into, in less than an hour. I couldn’t understand how another human being could really do this much harm to another human being. Weren't we all from God? Where was God when I needed protection? If that was not bad enough I thought I was going to die and melt into the floor when I saw my parents crying and running to me when I walked into the hospital waiting room. I completely let them down, how could I possibly let this happen?

Well life did go on and I stayed with my parents for about a month then had to go clean out my apartment. It was like cleaning out the apartment of someone that recently died. I didn’t recognize anything. There were still the dusted fingerprints on all of the furniture and the walls. The bed was still the same as the night it happened but I was so detached. It was like my soul died in that apartment. I gave everything away. I could not have anything in my life from that death trap. I learned that furniture from the thrift store is really not so bad and it’s cheap.

I asked my sweet friend to move in with me because I still could not be alone. I was scared to be in my apartment, in my car or in church. I didn’t feel safe anywhere. I was scared to go outside but more terrified to be at home because it happened in my home where I asleep and safely locked away from the world. I remember that I came home from work one day and I was so scared to go into the apartment. I had the coolest jeep, because I was the cool surfer girl, at the time. I sat on the hood of the coolest jeep and cried for three hours waiting on my roommate to get home. I couldn’t bring myself to even unlock the door. I was going to therapy but it seemed to not be working as I had hoped. I now had everyone of the other victims fears in my head. This sucked! How do I overcome this paralyzing fear?

The next day, when I arrived home from work, I was terrified to open my apartment door, but I did and I started walking through the kitchen. The apartment was an open floor plan so no real place to hide in the living areas. I didn’t know what to do but I was sure that my attacker was in my living room coming for me. I needed to hide now, but where? My cracked mind actually opened the oven door and tried to figure out how I could climb inside and hide. I thought, as I was running full speed out the back door, that my life was completely over and I would soon be in a mental hospital. So from then on I only came home when I knew my roommate was already there. That went on for years. I didn’t go anywhere by myself.

A year or so later, I found out that my attacker had been arrested for raping 15 girls that all looked like me and the one that was raped after me was found dead in the river, not far from where I lived. That could have been me and I know it. I know it because my attacker came after me and moved into an apartment that I was managing, after he was accidentally bonded out of jail. My memory blocked his face and image to save my sanity but it didn't block my sense of smell. I called the police department and they came over immediately. I had to help with the capture of my attacker to prevent other girls from being raped and murdered. He had to know that I didn't recognise him by vision. It had been a year, my parents paid a private detective and the police were looking but I couldn't identify anyone in police pictures. But I knew this was him by smell like I know what apple pie smells like. I knew he was coming to kill me. The police gave me a guard and with my help, and the help of the FBI, set up a a trap and they got him. They found evidence and they were going to try him for serial rape and murder.

This shook me to my core but I did find comfort in that I love research and found so much information on recovery. I was able to see that maybe my life was spared to help people who are going through the same thing. God was with me and the angels were yelling at me to get up. Otherwise I would have been killed that fateful night that I decided to stay in town with my girlfriends. I started throwing myself into everything that I could to make me stronger and braver. At that moment, I decided that I am still alive for reason so I should start enjoying this wonderful life that I was given. I was lucky enough to have that life changing revelation at 25, only 3 short years after my attack. So young and a full life ahead. I decide to start traveling with work and moved to South Florida by myself and lived in Naples near the beach. I traveled to South Beach in Miami alone and just met new friends along the way. I then traveled to Colorado for a bit and even went skydiving a couple of times with my Dad. I was going to do everything that I wanted to do. It was extremely hard to function, and still is, but I have to push through it.

The District Attorney called me personally, 13 years later, the day my attacker was convicted for murder, and told me that he would never be released from prison. At least that day I could stop looking over my shoulder. I received that call when I was 35 years old. I thought I would stop being scared to go to sleep at night, but it is now nearly thirty years after the attack and I still have to take sleeping pills to go to sleep. I have continued to do intensive research and have just recently learned how to stop the panic attacks. I sometimes would find myself in the middle of the street and not even realize I was running in my sleep and actually unlocked the door and ran outside. I’m just so glad that I never fell down and broke something or fell in a ditch. Crazy! I just recently did that a couple of years and luckily my boyfriend heard the alarm go off and came after me. I was about to run down the stairs. I live on a boat now so I can't go running but I still get up at night and look for intruders. My mind is still cracked. I say cracked because I remind myself of a porcelain doll. I have been broken and I’ve tried to glue myself back together. I’m still me, the porcelain doll, but now full of cracks.

I have found a way to make my life amazing and push through those times when I still feel like freezing in place or hiding from the world. I didn’t use medication because I tried Valium at first but I would sleep the entire day away. I loved blocking out the world, but that is not what I wanted. I wanted MY LIFE back! Damn him for trying to steal it from me. I am furious but I now have power over my body and soul again. I am happier than ever and now actually see the attack as a way to help others. I’m still on Earth for a reason!

If you have been through anything traumatic, then you know these horrible feelings. Please read the following pages as a daily guide to help you find yourself again. I have practiced these for years and it always brings me to my happy place and one with the world. This is a guide you can use over and over. It worked for me and it’s just for getting to know yourself again from the inside out. It’s a way to stay focused for 30 days at a time. I continue to use this and build on it to strengthen my soul and give me power to live my life. Follow this 30 day guide and write down your feelings and actions to build your life back. I never thought I would be here and living this wonderful life after the trauma in my life. But since growing from the exercises, I have lived in beautiful cities. I have amazing friends. I have traveled the world and have the love of my life tuck me into bed every night. I’m still amazed.

How did I get here and how can you get this peace? You start by forgiving those that did you wrong and betrayed you. You gain power over your fears and by giving back to others that need your help. Like I said, I was so lucky to have a life changing event when I was so young. I never take anything for granted. I stop and smell the roses because the season will change. I hug everyone around me because I may not see them again. I give my family extra love because they put their lives on hold for me and they will never leave me. I get especially involved in the books I read and the movies I watch because I want to feel what the author wanted me to feel. I live the life I want to live, every single day because I have that power and you can too. I sincerely hope that you follow this book daily and find your wonderful life. I love quotes from strong people, they inspire me and help me grow, so I’ve included some of my favorite.

First things first. Let’s get into the right frame of mind. It’s so important that we reset our brain and prepare for the upcoming positive changes. You are what you think so from this point forward, always be positive. Anytime you find yourself having negative thoughts, like I can’t do this or this will never work for me. Recognise the negative thoughts and tell yourself that you are only going to be positive and you can do anything you want. Get a journal and write down your daily exercises and achievements. Let's get this blissful thing going!

Day 1

Repeat to yourself out loud or mentally over and over today:

My well being is my top priority.

Day 2

Everyone has scars. They may be from war, an accident, a fight, physical abuse or mental abuse. When we’re involved in a traumatic experience, the scars run deep into our soul. These scars are apart of us and will always be there but they can fade into a soul tattoo that we want to talk about and show sometimes.

Repeat to yourself out loud or mentally several times today:

Scars are transformed by love and affection.

“When you realize how perfect everything is you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky” Buddha

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

Day 8

Repeat to yourself out loud, and to yourself in the mirror, several times today:

I am a divine being of light, and I am peaceful, protected and secure

Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel, or vortex, and it refers to each of the seven energy centers of which our consciousness, our energy system, is composed. These chakras, or energy centers, function as pumps or valves, regulating the flow of energy through our energy system.

The functioning of the chakras reflects decisions we make concerning how we choose to respond to conditions in our life. We open and close these valves when we decide what to think, and what to feel, and through which perceptual filter we choose to experience the world around us. All of your senses, all of your perceptions, all of your possible states of awareness, everything it is possible for you to experience, can be divided into seven categories. Each category can be associated with a particular chakra.

Thus, the chakras represent not only particular parts of your physical body, but also particular parts of your consciousness. The symptom served to communicate to the person through their body what they had been doing to themselves in their consciousness. When the person changes something about their way of being, getting the message communicated by the symptom, the symptom has no further reason for being, and it can be released, according to whatever the person allows themselves to believe is possible. Everything is possible. Anything can be healed. It's just a question of how to do it.”

What are you feeling right now? This just for your soul and heart.

Day 16

Set small goals that will get you to the life goal. By completing achievable goals, we are reinstating success in our life rather than failure. Sometimes, we get overwhelmed with work and our daily lives that we forget to focus on ourselves. Remember, we finish off a pie by eating one piece at a time, not by putting the entire pie in our mouth. Life goals are the same way, by completing the small goals or bites, we will soon reach our life goals.

Example: Life goal is to go scuba diving.

1. Small goal - Find out where you can take dive lessons. Contact sources and record information. Goal is completed!

2. Small goal - Save money for cost of lessons. Record how much the lessons cost. Divide the cost by 4 months pay and save that amount each month. Goal is completed within 4 months or sooner if funds are available!

3. Small goal - Take the lessons and dive test. Schedule the location of lessons and date to take the dive test. Complete the lessons and take the test and goal is completed!

Action item:

Day 17

Be aware of the little hurdles you overcome every day. Getting to work on time in heavy traffic, completing a project before the hard date deadline, making sure the kids do their homework, getting dinner on the table at a decent time, etc.

Acknowledge your efforts and successes and allow yourself to be successful. Reward yourself daily for your hard work. You can reward yourself with that yoga or spin class you wanted to take or a foot massage for overcoming the hurdles.

It’s important that we allow a time to celebrate our successes but remember to celebrate with action that will benefit us long term. An example is that food is a short term reward and may have side effects such as weight gain, diabetes, etc. Spa and gym rewards relieve your brain of stress and strengthens your entire body and soul.

"The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence." Confucius

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Action item:

Today, look forward to the reward, at the end of the day, for overcoming today’s hurdles.

Acknowledge your success and reward yourself.

What are you feeling right now? This just for your soul and heart.

Day 18

Have you ever stopped and wondered, Why is this person that is yelling at the store clerk so upset? Or, why some people take out their frustrations on the bank tellers? If you haven’t, you may want to start.

During your recovery, there will be times that the tread is wearing thin and you have a hard time keeping your emotions together. Well, this happens to everyone. The man yelling at the store clerk could have just received a call that his relative just passed and he can’t cry now so he uses anger to cope. The lady yelling at the bank teller may have just lost her job and she has no money and two children.

We see upset people all day, but we never ask what happened to this person and try to help because we’re so busy. Just like you, they are dealing with hurt and pain. You are able to help someone by just letting them vent and get the anger out.

This is hard because our immediate response is to be defensive and fight back, but take a breath and close your mouth. Just know that their pride will not let them cry on your shoulder so they are yelling at you and probably don’t realize they are in this emotional state. Be kind and offer to help how you can.

Try to be aware of your emotions and realize the words you say has an affect on others.

“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”

John Holmes

Action item:

Be kind to others

If you see someone in need today, try to give them what they need. Perhaps buy them a cup of coffee at the cafe or simply just listen with an empathetic ear.

What did you learn?

What are you feeling right now? This just for your soul and heart.

Day 19

Often we blame ourselves for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or we ask ourselves, “How could I allow that to happen to me?” and “Why did I do that?

Just know that we all face trials as a part of life. It is how we handle and overcome these trials that will determine if we will have a successful life. Forgiving yourself may be harder than forgiving someone else. When burdened by a sense of blame for something that has happened in the past, this negativity can cause anger and unhappiness. Forgiving yourself is an important act of moving forward and protecting your health.

Regrets are wounds, once we forgive ourselves they will fade into a scar and just be one of our memories. If we don’t forgive ourselves, we pick at the wounds and they will infect our body and soul.

“When you initially forgive, it is like letting go of a hot iron. There is initial pain and the scars will show, but you can start living again.” Stephen Richards

Action item:

Forgive yourself

Write down the things in your life you would have done differently

Acknowledge the skills you had at that time in your life. Could you have really changed the outcome? Probably not.

Repeat out loud “I did the best I could” and repeat it until you believe it.

What did you learn?

What are you feeling right now? This just for your soul and heart.

Day 20

Take a look at your life. Is this what you wanted to be when you grew up? Be honest.

Besides the hard hits we’ve taken, are you living the life you envisioned? So many of us do things we don’t want because of peer pressure, avoiding conflict and to make others happy.

Life is about compromises but too much compromise will cause you to live someone else’s life, not the one you were meant to live. So, ten years have gone by and you gave up on your dream after moving out of state, marriage, family, etc. You can get back on the track of the life you want but first you have to be honest and find out what is working, what is not working in your life and what you really want.

“I was once afraid of people saying, “Who does she think she is?” Now I have the courage to stand and say, ‘This is who I am.'” Oprah Winfrey

Day 21

Spirituality is different for everyone. For some people, it is organized religion like church, synagogue, a mosque, etc. For some people, it is more personal using private prayer, yoga, meditation and reflection. Find out what type of spirituality you prefer. If you are not completely sure or like me, changed after trauma, explore and learn them all. Beware of cults and gurus and talk to people you trust and find what lifts you and fits your beliefs. Stay true to you mind, heart and soul.

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.” Buddha

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” Dalai Lama

“I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.”

Example:

If we think “I’m so fat”, our brain responds “OK” and we continue to gain weight.

If we think “I’m healthy and fit”, our brain responds “OK” and we continue to see opportunities to be healthy and fit and our bodies follow that course.

If we think “I never have enough money,'' our brain responds “OK” and we continue to see our money spent on emergencies, more bills, etc.

If we think “I am blessed with an abundance of love, health and wealth”, our brain responds “OK” and we continue to see opportunities for love, health and wealth.

"Today I will move forward with joy and optimism. I feel whole again. I embrace my new beginning. I release all negative thought patterns of guilt and self condemnation. I choose to forgive myself completely. I feel so liberated and free. I am safe now. I accept where I am right now on life's journey. My mind is full of clarity, confidence, and hope. I am so thankful to be here enjoying this moment." Thomas J. Cantrell

Start at Day 1 again and repeat monthly.

Above all, love yourself.
