Mystic, Connecticut is comprised of two towns, Groton and Stonington, separated by the Mystic River but unified by a a heavily-used bridge. The first settlers in the Mystic area arrived some years earlier, about 1654. Mystic celebrates that year as its founding, and in 2004 celebrated its 350th Anniversary. The name Mystic, as derives from the Pequot term "missi-tuk", describing a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind.

Mystic Seaport

Whaleship Charles W. Morgan

Charles W. Morgan is the last of an American whaling fleet that numbered more than 2,700 vessels. Built and launched in New Bedford, Mass. in 1841, the Morgan is now America's oldest commercial ship still afloat–only the USS Constitution is older.

L. A. Dunton

L. A. Dunton is a National Historic Landmark fishing schooner and museum in the Mystic Seaport Museum. It was built in 1921 and is the last ship afloat of her type, which was once the most common sail-powered fishing vessel sailing from New England ports.

Pequotsepos Manor

Pequotsepos Manor, also known as Denison Homestead, is a historic house museum that was built in 1717, and stands on land that has been in continuous ownership of the Denison family since 1654. Pequotsepos Manor, is on the National Register of Historical Places.

The Mystic River Bascule Bridge

The Mystic River Bascule Bridge is a draw over the Mystic River . This bridge is unique because all its mechanical parts are exposed, so it’s truly fascinating to watch in action. People strolling around downtown frequently stop to watch when the bridge moves up and down. The Mystic River Bascule Bridge opens daily at hourly intervals (forty minutes past the hour) from May 1st to October 31st. The bridge only opens during the daylight hours and each opening lasts about five minutes. The Strauss Heel-trunnion type bridge was designed by former Otis Elevator Company Chief Engineer Thomas Ellis Brown of New York and built in 1920 by the J. E. FitzGerald Construction Company.

Misquamicut State Beach

Williams Beach Park

Eastern Point Beach

This is a great place to hang out with the family at the mouth of the Thames River. With showers, picnic tables, a concession stand and a playground. The shallow waters along the beach, as well as the lifeguard areas that make it a safe place to let the kids splash around and enjoy the refreshing sea.
