The Bighorn Mountains are a mountain range in northern Wyoming and southern Montana in the United States, stretching from the Rocky Mountains approximately 200 miles to the Great Plains.
The Bighorns were uplifted approximately 70 million years ago. They consist of sedimentary rock strata laid down before mountain were created. The marine and near shore sedimentary layers ran are often rich in fossils. Following the uplift, large volumes of sediments, rich in fossils were deposited in the basins. U-shaped valleys and glacial lakes can be seen in the mountain range.
