The South Haven Pier Lighthouse is on Great Lakes in South Haven, Michigan. It was constructed in the early 1870's and it was built as an open wood tower topped by an octagonal cast iron lantern and had a different look than it is today. In 1903, after 30 years of harsh Lake Michigan weather, the old wood tower was replaced a new cylindrical metal tower. Then in 1940, the 1200-foot concrete pier was constructed and the wood walkway was replaced with an iron system salvaged from a job site in Chicago. It now looks like many Great Lakes Lighthouses with the distinctive red exterior.
