Europeans first arrived in 1524 when Giovanni da Verrazano surveyed the east coast of North America. By the 17th century, British colonists had moved north from Virginia and settled in the area.
Boardwalk
Ocean City, Maryland's Boardwalk dates back to 1902 when several oceanfront hotel owners constructed a wooden walkway for the convenience of their guests. At high tide, they rolled it up and stored it. The permanent promenade was built in 1910 and extended for five blocks. After being leveled by a storm in 1962, it was rebuilt to its present 2.5 mile length. It is recognized as one of the best Boardwalk's in the country. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, amusements, night life, concerts and hotels.
Jolly Rodger at the Pier
In 1964 Charles “Buddy “ Jenkins purchased a franchise and opened the Arnold Palmer Putting Course and Driving Range. The following year, he added 10 Amusement Rides and over the next several years Jolly Roger® Park established itself as a major tourist attraction in the seaside resort. And In 1974, Jenkins acquired the rights to the iconic Ocean City Pier and with a multi-million dollar renovation added new rides and attractions including the iconic ferris wheel.
Ocean City Firefighters 9/11 Memorial
This project was over a decade in the planning, and on the fifth anniversary of the 11 September terrorist attacks, it was finally dedicated. The memorial honors Ocean City Firefighters of the past, present, and future and it recognizes firefighters from around the world. The memorial also acknowledges the losses of 11 September 2001 by memorializing the victims of the attacks and specifically the 343 firefighters from the Fire Department of the City of New York.
